Estimating Diffusion Models Using Repeated Cross-sections: Quantifying the Digital Divide∗

چکیده

This paper shows that a broad class of dynamic models of diffusion of new technology (usually estimated using duration models) can be estimated using data with extreme censoring i.e. when only discrete choice data is available in the form of repeated cross-sections. This finding should have broad relevance across numerous fields where such models are currently used, since it opens up new potential sources of data. For example expenditure surveys are commonly available for most countries in this format. We present Monte Carlo evidence to show that the maximum likelihood estimator is consistent and efficient in this context. We also apply this methodology to estimate a diffusion model of Internet services at home for U.S. consumers. We use publicly available Current Population Survey (CPS) data to estimate these models. Consequently we are able to test for the existence of and, estimate the dimensions of the so-called Digital Divide. These estimates also allow us to make forecasts of Internet penetration in the United States across various levels of aggregation (geographic and demographic). ∗I would like to thank Patrick Bayer, Hanming Fang, Martin Pesendorfer, Gustav Ranis and Subrata Sen for many helpful discussions, seminar participants at Yale and also other IO folks at Yale who have all provided valuable suggestions and encouragement at different times. †Corresponding Address: Department of Economics, Yale University. 37 Hillhouse Avenue, New Haven. Non-destructive Method for Estimating Biomass of Plants Using Digital Camera Images

Abstract Plant growth and biomass assessments are required in production and research. Such assessments are followed by major decisions (e.g., harvest timing) that channel resources and influence outcomes. In research, resources required to assess crop status affect other aspects of experimentation and, therefore, discovery. Destructive harvests are important because they influence treatment s...

Estimating the Efficient Portfolio in Non-Radial DEA and DEA-R Models

The portfolio is a perfect combination of stock or assets, which an investor buys them. The objective of the portfolio is to divide the investment risk among several shares. Using non-parametric DEA and DEA-R methods can be of great significance in estimating portfolio. In the present paper, the efficient portfolio is estimated by using non-radial DEA and DEA-R models. By proposing non-radial m...

3D model construction of induced polarization and resistivity data with quantifying uncertainties using geostatistical methods and drilling (Case study: Madan Bozorg, Iran)

Madan Bozorg is an active copper mine located in NE Iran, which is a part of the very wide copper mineralization zone named Miami-Sabzevar copper belt. The main goal of this research work is the 3D model construction of the induced polarization (IP) and resistivity (Rs) data with quantifying the uncertainties using geostatistical methods and drilling. Four profiles were designed and surveyed us...

Comparison of Quadratic Levels of Digital Divide in Terms of Demographic Variables: Case Study of Rafsanjan City

This study aims to investigate the effect of demographic variables on quadratic levels of the digital divide (Van Dijk’s model), including material and physical access, motivational access, digital literacy and skills, and usage. The study population included 600 citizens of Rafsanjan, Iran. Data were collected using a researcher-made questionnaire and were analyzed in SPSS. The results showed ...

Nonlinear disjunctive kriging for the estimating and modeling of a vein copper deposit

ABSTRACT Estimation of mineral resources and reserves with low values of error is essential in mineral exploration. The aim of this study is to estimate and model a vein type deposit using disjunctive kriging method. Disjunctive Kriging (DK) as an appropriate nonlinear estimation method has been used for estimation of Cu values. For estimation of Cu values and modelling of the distributio...
